When you run your hand over an Abyssinian, you don’t feel a solid color. You feel a complex, multi-tonal tapestry. The hair shaft on a single strand isn’t one uniform shade from root to tip. Instead, it is divided into alternating bands of dark pigment and lighter, warm undercolor. This is called tickling, and it is the defining biological feature of the Abyssinian breed.

Breeders call this ‘roaning’ when the bands are too wide, and it is considered a fault in the show ring.

The specific shade of the Abyssinian depends on the non-agouti (black) gene interacting with the agouti gene. A ‘Ruddy’ Abyssinian has the classic wild brown base with black ticking. A ‘Sorrel’ (or Red) Abyssinian has a recessive gene that turns the black pigment into chocolate, resulting in a warm, coppery coat with reddish-brown ticking. A ‘Blue’ Abyssinian has a dilution gene that turns the black to grey, creating a soft, steel-blue ticking. A ‘Fawn’ Abyssinian has both the chocolate and dilution genes, resulting in a pale, creamy coat with pinkish-tan ticking.

Regardless of the base color, the mechanism is identical. The ticking is the Abyssinian’s signature. Without it, the cat is just a solid-colored domestic shorthair. The ticking is what gives the breed its ‘wild’ appearance, making it look like a miniature serval or a young ocelot, despite being entirely domestic.
