In our house, we grew up with kittens and dogs and we always had both at the same time. As long as cats and dogs are properly socialized, they can get along just fine. If a puppy and kitten are raised together, they generally will learn right away to tolerate each other, and some cats and dogs grow to be great friends. Kittens and puppies can learn to play together and keep each other entertained. Other kittens and dogs bond so strongly they even enjoy napping together.
- Getting started. Make sure the cat has access to a dog-free sanctuary at all times….A tall cat tree where the cat can be safe makes a great sanctuary…
- Keep the pets separate at first … and don’t rush the first meeting
- Feed them on opposite sides of a closed door. …let them get used to their scents
- Teach basic command to the dog such as “no”…
- Begin face-to-face meetings in a controlled environment…it is best to have more than one person so that you have full control of both the dog and the cat…
- Repeat sessions daily until the pet behavior of both accepts each other..
- Allow the socialized pets loose together. …
- Proceed with caution….and monitor the cat and dog relationship as needed
