Cats are known for their soft and fluffy fur, and some of them have even made it to the Guinness World Records for their exceptional fur length. One such feline, named “Sophie Smith”, holds the record for the longest fur on a cat. In this article, we’ll take a closer look at this remarkable cat as well as the prior world record holder for the “Longest Fur” title.
Sophie Smith, a 2-year-old cat at the time from California, set the record for Longest Fur on a Cat. She surpassed the late Colonel Meow‘s old record by more than an inch in November of 2014. Her tail fur is 25.68 centimeters (10.11 inches) at its longest point.

Colonel Meow (prior record holder for longest fur)

In 2014, Colonel Meow was officially recognized by the Guinness World Records as the cat with the longest fur. His fur measured 9 inches (22.87 cm) long on average, with some hairs reaching up to 10 inches (25.4 cm) in length. To put this in perspective, the average cat fur length is between 1 and 2 inches (2.54-5.08 cm). Colonel Meow’s fur was so long and thick that he often looked like a fluffy, black cloud.
Maintaining Colonel Meow’s fur was no easy feat. His owner, Anne Marie Avey, had to brush him for hours every day to prevent matting and tangling. She also had to bathe him regularly and trim his fur around his eyes and ears to ensure that he could see and hear properly. Despite the amount of work that went into grooming Colonel Meow, his owner enjoyed every moment of it. She said that Colonel Meow’s fur was like his superpower and made him stand out from other cats.
