American Bobtail Cats Origin

The origin of the American Bobtail breed is traced to when Yodie, a short-tailed brown tabby male, was mated with a seal-point Siamese female to create the American Bobtail’s original bloodline. The breed was developed in the late 1960s and most of the early bloodlines have died out.  This cat’s original appearance genetics were modified in the breed to form a new and improved strain which comes in essentially all colors and coat types. The breed was first recognized by The International Cat Association (TICA, US-based), in 1989. The breed has been accepted for championship competition by TICA, the Cat Fanciers’ Association (CFA, also US-based)[ and the American Cat Fanciers Association (ACFA).  The breed is “recognized” (as existing), as both American Bobtail Longhair and American Bobtail Shorthair, in the Germany-based World Cat Federation (WCF).

American Bobtail Cats Personality

American bobtails are considered as sweet, affectionate, docile and make great companions and lap cats. When properly socialized, they are not aggressive and do well with older kids and cat-friendly pet playmates. While this breed is playful, it’s not super energetic.  This breed makes for a great therapy pet.  They are considered good companions for people who travel.

American Bobtail Cats Size

The American Bobtail has a naturally short bobtail that can be seen clearly above the back when she is alert. No tail is exactly the same, but the average length is in the range of 1 to 4 inches.  These cats take 2-3 years to reach their full size.  The typical weight range of an American Bobtail is in the range of 7 – 18 pounds with males weighing more than females.

American Bobtail Lifespan

A healthy American Bobtail will typically life in the range of 13 – 20 years.

American Bobtail Cats Colors and Fur Patterns

American Bobtails come in a wide range of colors including:  chocolate / brown / sable cinnamon lavender / silver fawn blue / gray black / ebony cream / beige / tan lilac red / orange white.  Fur patterns include:  bi-color, solid, tabby, calico, tri-color and color point.
