Exotic Shorthair Cats Origin
The Exotic Shorthair was originally bred as an easy-to-groom alternative to the higher maintenance Persian. The Exotic Shorthair’s short, dense, and plush coat is much easy to care for versus the longhair Persian. The Exotic Shorthair and Persian are bred to the same standards except for the coat. American Shorthair breeders began to mix Persians, Burmese, and Russian Blues into their American Shorthair lines sometime during the 1950s. They hoped to recreate the beautiful looks of the Persian in American Shorthairs. Many breeders then bred these crossed kittens with Persians to develop the Exotic Shorthair breed. Eventually, the Cat Fanciers Association began to limit the number of outcrosses allowed in purebred Exotic Shorthairs. In 1987, they banned Exotic Shorthairs to outcrosses completely, allowing them only to be bred with Persians.
Exotic Shorthair Cats Personality and Characteristics
Exotic Shorthairs have a gentle and calm personality reminiscent of the Persian, but are generally livelier than their longhaired ancestors. They are known to be curious, playful and they are friendly to other cats and dogs. They don’t like being left alone and are much happier with the presence of their owner. They tend to show more affection and loyalty than most breeds and make excellent lap cats. Their calm, steady nature makes them ideal apartment cats for city dwellers. These exotics do retain some of the energetic spark of the American Shorthair, and they are often capable mouse hunters. The Exotic Shorthair’s sweet, relaxed, and playful personality, as well as her low-maintenance grooming and exercise needs, make her the perfect pick for first-time cat owners, or families with children or other pets.

Exotic Shorthairs typically weigh in the range of 10 – 20 pounds with males generally weighing more than females. Their height is typically 10-12 inches.

Exotic Shorthair Cats Colors and Fur Patterns
Fur colors include: solid black or white, golden, and silver. Exotic Shorthairs also appear in a variety of patterns, including tortoiseshell, bicolor, tricolor, tabby, smoke, shaded, and Himalayan (a light colored body with darker points, and blue eyes). Eye Color tends to vary with coat color: Mostly gold or copper, green, or blue.
