The mutation is dominant, meaning a single copy of the gene (Mm) produces the tailless phenotype. But the homozygous state (MM) is lethal. Kittens that inherit two copies of the mutation do not develop a spine past the fourth or fifth lumbar vertebra. They are born with severe spinal defects, often unable to defecate or urinate, and usually die within days of birth. This is not a rare complication. It is the rule. Approximately one in four kittens in a standard tailless-to-shorty breeding dies in utero or shortly after birth because of the MM genotype.

Rumpies are the ideal show cat, but they carry the highest risk of spinal defects. About half of all rumpies are homozygous (MM) and die. The other half are heterozygous (Mm) and survive, but they still carry a higher risk of spinal issues than cats with tails.

A riser has a small stub of tail, usually no more than an inch long. Risers are the most common surviving genotype. They are heterozygous (Mm) and have a milder form of the spinal defect. They are generally healthy, but they can still suffer from spinal cord compression, which can lead to incontinence or mobility issues later in life.

A stumpy has a tail that is longer than a riser’s but shorter than a normal cat’s. Stumpies are the safest genotype. They are heterozygous (Mm) and have the mildest form of the spinal defect. They are generally healthy, but they are disqualified from the show ring because they do not meet the breed standard for tail length.

Breeders manage the breeding program by pairing a tailless cat (Mm) with a short-tailed cat (mm). This produces a litter that is 50% tailless (Mm), 50% normal-tailed (mm), and 25% homozygous lethal (MM). The MM kittens are culled from the breeding program, and the remaining kittens are raised. This is a delicate balancing act. Breeders must constantly monitor the health of their cats and cull any that show signs of spinal defects.

The Spinal Defect: What the Tailless Gene Actually Does

The Manx mutation does not just remove the tail. It affects the entire spine. The Tbx4 mutation causes the vertebrae to fuse together, creating a rigid, shortened spine. This can lead to a condition called Manx syndrome, which affects the spinal cord and the nerves that control the bladder and bowels. Cats with Manx syndrome are often incontinent, unable to defecate or urinate without help. They can also suffer from mobility issues, including paralysis of the hind legs.

The severity of Manx syndrome varies widely. Some cats are mildly affected, with only minor incontinence issues. Others are severely affected, with complete paralysis and incontinence. The condition is not curable. It is managed with daily cleaning, medication, and sometimes surgery. The goal is to keep the cat as comfortable as possible, but the underlying spinal defect remains.
