Why Your Cat Is Drinking Too Much Water: What Polydipsia Actually Means for Feline Health

You notice it on a Tuesday, the way you notice changes in your kitchen light fixture only after they’ve been there for weeks: the water bowl is empty again, and the bowl next to it is empty too. You refill both, and two hours later, you catch your cat sitting at the counter, pawing at the faucet. You tell yourself it’s nothing. Cats are weird. They like running water. But the bowl that used to last all day now needs refilling twice, and the litter box is heavier than it should be.

That is the moment most owners cross the line from “cat quirk” into “clinical observation.” What you are watching is polydipsia, excessive water consumption, and it is the single most common early signal of feline chronic kidney disease, diabetes mellitus, and hyperthyroidism. Your cat is not being difficult. The biology is working exactly as it evolved to work, and it is trying to tell you something you can measure.

The Baseline Number Most Owners Never Learn

Healthy adult cats drink roughly 50 milliliters of water per 4.5 kilograms of body weight every day. A four-kilogram domestic shorthair should consume about 40 to 50 milliliters. That is roughly one-third of a standard cup. You can measure this at home without buying anything fancy. Fill a measuring cup, note the level, fill the bowl, and track how much you add back over 24 hours. Do this for three days. If you are consistently adding more than 50 milliliters per 4.5 kilograms, you have a baseline number that matters.

Here is the problem: most cats never show up for a baseline check. They get water, they drink what they need, and nobody measures. When polydipsia starts, it is gradual. The bowl empties faster. The litter box clumps heavier. The cat licks your face more often, seeking moisture. By the time vomiting or lethargy appears, the disease has usually progressed to Stage 3 or 4. The ISFM (International Society of Feline Medicine) guidelines emphasize that polydipsia is a screening tool, not a diagnosis, and it is the most accessible screening tool you already have.

Why Three Diseases All Look Like the Same Problem

Chronic kidney disease, diabetes mellitus, and hyperthyroidism all cause polydipsia through the same mechanical failure: the body cannot hold onto water, so the kidneys dump it, and the cat drinks to replace what it lost. The mechanism differs slightly for each, but the observable result is identical. Your cat drinks more, pees more, and the litter box gets heavier.

Chronic kidney disease is the most common. It affects roughly one in four cats over the age of ten. The kidneys lose their ability to concentrate urine, so the cat produces large volumes of dilute urine. The body signals thirst to compensate. Diabetes mellitus causes polydipsia when glucose spills into the urine, pulling water with it through osmosis. Hyperthyroidism speeds up the entire metabolism, increasing water turnover and pushing more fluid through the kidneys.

The ISFM guidelines recommend tracking water intake as a primary screening method because it is non-invasive, cheap, and repeatable. A cat drinking 100 milliliters per day when its baseline is 40 is showing polydipsia. A cat drinking 150 is showing severe polydipsia. The number tells you how fast to act.

How to Measure What Your Cat Actually Drinks

You do not need a veterinary appointment to start. You need a measuring cup and three days. Here is the exact method the ISFM recommends for home monitoring:

If the average exceeds 50 milliliters per 4.5 kilograms of body weight, schedule a veterinary visit. If it exceeds 100 milliliters per 4.5 kilograms, schedule it this week. The ISFM (International Society of Feline Medicine) explicitly states that polydipsia above 100 milliliters per 4.5 kilograms warrants urgent investigation, not “wait and see.”

Do not rely on wet food to mask polydipsia. Wet food contains roughly 75 to 80 percent water, which can keep a cat hydrated even when its kidneys are failing. This is why many owners never notice the problem until the cat stops eating the wet food or the disease progresses past the point of reversal. Tracking water intake separately from food intake is the only way to catch polydipsia early.

What the Vet Will Actually Test For

When you bring your cat in for polydipsia, the vet will run a basic screening panel. This includes a complete blood count, a serum chemistry profile, and a urinalysis with specific gravity. The specific gravity is the most important number. Healthy cat urine has a specific gravity above 1.035. A cat with chronic kidney disease will show a specific gravity below 1.030, often as low as 1.008. Diabetes will show glucose in the urine. Hyperthyroidism will show elevated thyroid hormone levels.

The ISFM (International Society of Feline Medicine) recommends running these tests on any cat showing polydipsia, regardless of age. While chronic kidney disease is most common in older cats, diabetes and hyperthyroidism can appear in cats as young as five. The tests are cheap, fast, and they tell you exactly which disease is driving the water consumption. Once you know the disease, you can treat it. CKD can be managed with diet and fluids. Diabetes can be controlled with insulin. Hyperthyroidism can be treated with medication, radioactive iodine, or surgery.

When Polydipsia Is Not a Disease

Not every increase in water intake means organ failure. Environmental factors matter. Hot weather increases water consumption by 20 to 30 percent. Dry air from heating systems does the same. Stress can cause polydipsia in some cats, though it is less common than in dogs. Medications like corticosteroids increase thirst. These are real, measurable causes that do not require a prognosis.

However, environmental causes are temporary. If your cat drinks more water during summer but returns to baseline in autumn, there is no disease. If the polydipsia persists for more than two weeks, or if it is accompanied by weight loss, vomiting, or lethargy, the environmental explanation is unlikely. The ISFM guidelines stress that persistent polydipsia, regardless of environmental factors, warrants a full screening panel.

What You Can Do Tonight

Buy a measuring cup. Mark your water bowls. Track the water you add back over 24 hours for three days. If the average exceeds 50 milliliters per 4.5 kilograms, call your vet. If it exceeds 100, call them today. Do not wait for vomiting. Do not wait for lethargy. Polydipsia is the earliest signal you have, and it is the one that gives you the most time to act. The ISFM (International Society of Feline Medicine) recommends annual screening for cats over seven, but polydipsia tracking can start at any age.

Your cat is not being difficult. The biology is working exactly as it evolved to work, and it is trying to tell you something you can measure. The question is whether you will listen before the bowl runs dry.
