Two World Records for Tallest Domestic Cat

The Tallest Domestic Cat world records have been Savannah cats and they have dominated this world record category...see the world record holder here...

The Tallest Domestic Cat world records have both been Savannah cats and they have dominated this world record category.  The world’s tallest domestic cat breed is the Savannah cat. This breed is a relatively new breed that was first created in the 1980s by breeding a domestic cat with a serval, a wild African cat. The result is a large, tall and athletic cat with distinctive markings and a loyal personality.

The last three Tallest domestic cats have all been Savannahs:  “Arcturus” (2016–18), “Trouble” (2011–16) and “Scarlett’s Magic” (2009–11). There is some controversy with Savannahs competing for this world record as this particular breed is not recognized by some cat fanciers (breeders) as a domestic cat.  Technically, the Savannah is a hybrid between house cats and wild African servals. Indeed, because of their heritage, some states in the USA have outright banned Savannahs, while in the UK, it’s illegal to own a serval or an “F1” (first-generation) Savannah without a special license.  TICA has recognized the Savannah as a registered cat breed since 2001.

The Tallest Domestic Cat Ever World Record

The world record for the tallest domestic cat belongs to an awe-inspiring feline named Arcturus Aldebaran Powers. A Savannah cat, Arcturus measured an astonishing 19.05 inches (48.4 cm) from paw to shoulder, making him the tallest domestic cat ever recorded. Owned by Dr. Will Powers and his wife Lauren from Michigan, USA, Arcturus achieved this record in 2017, forever securing a place in the annals of feline history.  His amazing height (measured from the ground to the withers or the ridge between the shoulder blades) was verified on November 3, 2016.  Sadly, Arcturus passed away in early 2018.

Current World Record for Tallest Living Domestic Cat

As of 2024, Fenrir Antares Powers, a striking Savannah cat, holds the Guinness World Record for the tallest living domestic cat. Fenrir stands at an impressive 18.83 inches (47.83 cm) from paw to shoulder. This unique feline is owned by Dr. William Powers, a physician from Michigan who has a history of raising record-breaking cats, including his previous pets Arcturus, the tallest cat ever at 19.05 inches, and Cygnus, who held the record for the longest tail.

Fenrir, whose name derives from one of Saturn’s moons, is an F2 Savannah cat, which is recognized by The International Cat Association as a domestic breed. He is the brother of Arcturus Aldebaran Powers (USA), who formerly held this record before his passing. Arcturus measured in at 48.40 cm (19.05 in).

Fenrir plays an active role beyond just holding records. He serves as a therapy cat in Dr. Powers’ clinic, helping to comfort patients, particularly those receiving treatment for HIV. His presence is said to bring calm and joy, proving that his remarkable size is matched by a gentle and caring temperament.  Dr. Powers, who has also been involved with cat shelter initiatives, uses Fenrir’s fame to promote cat adoption and advocate for animal welfare.
